Bloodless Medicine and Surgery at Wuesthoff
Through advances in equipment and technology, physicians and surgeons are now able
to safely and successfully perform a multitude of procedures ranging from routine
appendectomies, to complex orthopedic and open-heart surgeries, without using blood
transfusions.
The primary benefit of this surgical technique is the virtual elimination of the
risk of contracting blood-borne illnesses such as hepatitis or HIV. Studies also
show there's an improved chance of long-term survival for patients who have undergone
surgery for cancer using bloodless techniques – and a significantly reduced risk
of contracting bacterial infections, making the need for antibiotic therapy less
likely. Finally, this program helps people who hold a religious conviction that
prevents them from receiving blood transfusions.
The physicians at Wuesthoff Health System who participate in this program have a
high level of expertise in "transfusion-free" or bloodless procedures, and a personal
desire to assist individuals requesting medical procedures without blood transfusions.
Wuesthoff Medical Center-Rockledge is proud to be one of the approximately 160 hospitals
across the country that offer this medical program.
Serving patients in Brevard County, and throughout the state, The Central Florida
Blood Preservation Program at Wuesthoff is facilitated by a manager who is knowledgeable
about all aspects of bloodless healthcare. The manager will be directly involved
with patients to ensure their choices regarding bloodless medical procedures are
understood and accommodated by our staff.
