Wuesthoff Health System Helmet Campaign

Wuesthoff Health System, along with the community was devastated by the loss of Guadalupe Bonilla, the third grader from Golfview Elementary who was killed while riding her bicycle to school.

Since then, Wuesthoff Health System has partnered with Brevard County Public Schools to implement a helmet safety campaign to increase awareness of helmet use and prevent injuries caused by head traumas.

"The goal of this campaign is to reach the youth in this county and encourage them to wear helmets and other safety equipment when participating in sports such as bike riding, skateboarding or any other sport that may place them in danger of injuring their head," said David Williams, DO, Emergency Physician at Wuesthoff.

The first poster was unveiled in 2005, at Golfview Elementary in Rockledge, where Bonilla attended school. More than 5,000 helmet posters were distributed throughout the schools and businesses in Brevard County over the next year.

The campaign does not stop with posters. It will include bike rodeos to teach children about bike safety, free helmets and handouts including brochures and bike safety stickers that cover everything kids need to know to keep them safe.
